Will My Restorations Look Natural?

When you visit Cedarwood Dental Group for restorative care, we always emphasize quality materials with an artistic flair. Biocompatible products, along with expert techniques, ensure your treatments are safe and custom crafted to match your unique smile.

Do Dental Fillings Really Help?

A cavity is a hole left behind after bacteria breaks down the enamel. The decay will continue to spread if left untreated. Fillings work by replacing the destroyed portion of the tooth with a composite material designed to match your surrounding teeth. The filling restores the strength and integrity of your tooth and will stop decay from re-entering the treated areas.

Bonding, Veneers, or Crowns?

When choosing the right treatment for you, it’s essential to communicate your wants and needs to our Fairport dentists. We'll take the time to listen and provide the right treatment, so you achieve the best results.

Composite Bonding

Dental bonding can be used as both a cosmetic and restorative procedure. Bonding can repair chips, breaks, cracks, stains, or spaces between the teeth. Bonding is one of the most cost-effective procedures offered, and treatment is usually completed in one visit. Bonding is minimally invasive and requires minimal tooth removal, which allows you to get multiple teeth bonded in a single appointment.

Porcelain Veneers

Dental veneers are thin, tooth-colored shells bonded to the front surface of teeth to correct many different cosmetic problems. They are made of porcelain or resin composite which provides durability and beauty. In the event of a broken or chipped tooth, some individuals may only need one veneer, but you can get up to six to eight veneers at once to produce an even, symmetrical smile.

How Do Crowns Work to Repair My Smile?

Crowns are dental prosthetic caps shaped like your natural tooth and used to cover damage that can’t be fixed with a simple filling. Dental crowns provide long-lasting support by covering the entire surface of a tooth. Crowns are ideal for restoring the size, shape, functionality, and appearance of a tooth and don’t require any specialized care after treatment. All you need to do is brush and floss daily and visit our office every six months for a professional cleaning and exam.

What About Severely Damaged or Possibly Infected Teeth?

If you’ve been told you may need root canal therapy by our team, remember, don’t panic! When decay and bacteria have entered the inner chamber of your tooth, compromising its health and function, root canal therapy is the last line of defense for saving your natural tooth whenever possible.

During your procedure, the infected inner tissues of the tooth are removed and your tooth is sealed with an anti-bacterial, body-safe material.

One of the greatest benefits you can enjoy after a root canal is rapid relief from the pain and sensitivity caused by an infected tooth.

What Happens if My Tooth Can’t be Saved?

An accident or severe gum disease may not be the only reasons why we recommend tooth extraction. The ultimate goal is to use restorative treatment and save as much of your natural tooth as possible. However, when decay or trauma leaves little tooth structure left, a dental extraction may be the best course of action. Here are five common reasons why tooth extraction may be necessary:

  1. Impacted Wisdom Teeth
  2. Fractured Tooth beneath Gum Line
  3. Severe Tooth Decay
  4. Advanced Periodontal Disease
  5. Crowded Teeth

Why Replace Missing Teeth?

Your jaw is intended to work with a full set of teeth, and for each missing tooth, you lose about 10% of your chewing ability. When an empty gap from a missing tooth is present, adjacent teeth begin shifting to fill the space. Not only does this make your healthy teeth more susceptible to decay and gum disease, but it can also alter your appearance. Your jawbone is stimulated by pressure applied through the tooth and down to the roots. Without this, stimulus bone density can decrease over time, causing facial features to shift and sag.

We highly recommended you schedule a consultation to discuss tooth replacement options as soon as you know you will need one. When you wait to replace a missing tooth, the more problem areas there are to fix.

Our Available Options for Tooth Replacement

You have three primary options when it comes to teeth replacement: bridges, dentures, and dental implants. Continue reading to discover which may be best for you.

Fixed Bridges - A dental bridge replaces teeth by using one or more neighboring teeth as the anchor. At each end, a prosthetic tooth (or teeth) is connected to a crown positioned over your adjacent teeth. The crowned tooth or teeth act as the support to secure a prosthetic in place. Like crowns, bridges can replace a single missing tooth. They can also be designed to restore up to three missing teeth in a row.

Full & Partial Dentures - These devices are personalized to replicate natural gums and teeth, providing aesthetics and function of multiple missing teeth at once. Dentures are intended to imitate the teeth's appearance, feel, and function. They are made of acrylic resin that rests on the gums and kept in position with suction and adhesive paste, while partial dentures use metal clasps to anchor onto neighboring teeth.

Dental Implants - Dental implants are considered the gold standard for full tooth replacement. They serve as artificial tooth roots and restore missing teeth from root to crown. Implants are biocompatible titanium posts surgically inserted in the jaw. They will fuse with natural tissue and bone to ensure a long-lasting and secure hold. Your dental crown, bridge, or denture can then be attached to the implant, replacing the one tooth or a complete arch.

More About Dental Implants

Before receiving a dental implant, you will need to have a thorough oral examination, including a review of your medical history and X-rays to check for suitability as well as jawbone density. Most people who are healthy enough for oral surgery can have a dental implant. The implant is surgically placed in one visit; then you will come back for a second visit to have the restoration attached. It is important to take care of your implant just as you do the rest of your teeth. Daily care should include:

  1. Brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a nonabrasive toothpaste
  2. Make sure you’re brushing twice daily or after every meal
  3. Floss at least once a day, if you have implants we recommend flossing after every meal
  4. Rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash both day and night
  5. Eat a nutritional and vitamin-rich diet, avoiding sticky, surgery foods, and drinks
  6. Be sure to visit us for regular cleanings and exams every six months, or sooner, if you have implants.
